VIOLENCE IS BECOMING OLD FASHION IN EDO- Obaseki

The Ministry of Social Development and Gender  Issues, MSDGI, has recently continued in her oars on the 16 Days Of Activism towards ameliorating the domestic hardship suffered by women and girls.


In a summit organised by the ministry recently in Benin City with theme, UNITE! INVEST TO PREVENT VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS, the first lady of Edo State, Her Excellency, Betsy Obaseki said, "no woman should be put on slave way. We won't condone that anymore.


"We are letting every man out there know that women and girls have the same right. No human being is more superior. Any man caught molesting a woman or involved in rape, must be dealt with according to the law.


"Edo State has launched a law to stop all these violences. The law Violence Against Persons Prohibition, VAPP, because violence is outdated and old fashion in Edo State.


"The Sen Daisy Danjuma Shelter has a session that handles GBV. The center is opened to everyone who is suffering domestic violence.


"The challenge many people have is the law. They think because they don't have the money to pursue the law, they should just let issues go. No. The Vivian Center is there to give justice.

"The Vivian Center is located inside the Sen Daisy Danjuma Shelter and the place has lawyers and security personnels. So money is no longer the issue because Edo State government will help take up the case and pursue to a logical conclusion.


"The girl child has the right to education. Every child should be sent to school during school hours and any parent caught using their children for child labour, will be made to face the law", she said.


Other members of the panel were in consonance with the first lady's submission.


On her part, the commissioner of the MSDGI, Mrs Christabel Omoh Ekwu who was represented by the Director, Gender Issues, Mrs Irenosen Ihensenkhien appreciated the first lady for standing up to the fight against Gender-Based Violence, GBV.


The Director who was optimistic of success in the prevention of violence said, "the 16 Days of Activism in Edo State is for everyone to be fully aware that Edo State can be absolutely free from every form of gender base violence".


In another development, the Permanent Secretary of the MSDGI, Mrs Barbara Osobajo, in her vote of thanks, appreciates the first lady, panelists, participants and security agencies for finding time to attend.


She said the expectation of the MSDGI is to see full compliance by people living in Edo State.


Highlight of the event was the launching of the VAPP law by the first lady, Mrs Obaseki.
