So today I stopped over at Standard Lectures at 277 ,Upper Sakponba Road , Benin City, where it all started for me on my journey, the only survivor of its kind in the ancient city of Benin ,where you had the likes of Solid Foundation, Fabiyi Akpata ,Paragon, Golden Touch Hilcrest ,Unibound ,etc Lectures.
I remember vividly in January, 1994,I was a young but very curious student of Niger College, Benin City .I walked into the Lecture and met Uncle Mike .He was very congenial, but strict .He however has been a great mentor to many , including me.
Pastor Michael Omoregbee Uncle Mike is a Teachers ' Teacher.One of the Founders of ElSA Play House in the University of Benin is the godfather of emerging intellectuals in Benin City .From.playing a cameo lead role in the Lancelot Oduwa Blockbuster called "Invasion 1897", to organising the most elaborate Students Prayer Events for JAMB/SSCE Examinations in Benin City called "Prayer Session" .Also realising that "All work and no play makes Jack a Dull Boy ", Pastor Mike Organizes ," JAMB Day Out ".In order for students to do prepared for the Examinations, he organises the JAMB Mock CBT .This is aside spontaneous JAMB Tests .
JAMB Letures is the only one place you can find Dr Taiye Izegaegbe, a Consultant Marloficial Surgeon Teach Biology and Chemistry, Barr Shirley Aghariaha -Aguebor a lawyer in the United Kingdom, teach English and Literature, Dr Paul Aifesehi a successful Medical Doctor in the United States teach physics, Mr Jimmy Ehigie teach Economics , Peter Nosa Ogbebor Teach Economics , Mr. Dominic Uwakwe Mr Iyobor Omoregie teach English .Felix Isere and Gabriel Ehigiator, both successful young lawyers and influencers teach Government.
Saving the best for last I hereby celebrate the Standard Lectures greats-Prof Geoffrey Airiavie, Rev IK Iyoha ,Uncle Monday , Mr. Ejiro Umukoro , Uncle Ben (Mathematics ) now of Zenith Bank.Engr Jude Osagie , Pastor Osagie Enabulele Mr Jimmy Ehigie , Mr Francis Osahon, Aunty Helen ,Aunty Magdelene .
There also other teachers like Uncle Stanley ,Uncle Ben , General -Joshua Izegaegbe, Kehinde Izegaegbe, Uncle Rafiu , Uncle Kelvin, among others. Please if I do not mention your name,do not be angry. My memory fails me.
Standard is not just a lecture , it is an experience. The discipline there is unparalleled and the teachers are friendly .There is even E-Learning as the teaching continues on WhatsApp.
This is 30 years of bringing up a generation of students , teachers and leaders. To Pastor Michael Omoregbee, they say teachers rewards are in heaven, but yours is here on earth.
