Edo Ex-Speaker Laments Trending Poor Morals Among Youths

A former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, EDHA, Rt Hon Frank Okiye has recently frowned at the persistent morale decadence trending among youths of these days.

Addressing newsmen at his office in Benin City, the parliamentarian said the urge to make quick money has driven the youths into illegal and illicit means.

According to Rt Hon Okiye, "when I was a growing boy, I saw what morals were. Morals in the sense that you see a child having respect for elders. That was when you need to work genuinely in order to make a living.

"When you buy a car then, your parents probe the source of the money. They will find time to visit your place of work to know if you actually worked for it. Children were afraid to be involved in anything illegal because of the shame it will bring to the family and the community.

"But these days, you see a 17 year old boy driving a car of about 20,000,000 naira worth and nobody is asking the source of the money.

"I don't believe there is money rituals. As for me as an individual, money rituals do not exist. There are illegal sources of making money and they coin it under rituals.

"The society should be accountable for the type of youths it breeds these days. There should be an uprightness in child upbringing. The government has a role to play in addressing the issue of youthful exuberance and the illicit ways of making money.

"Internet fraud has taken over our youths. When you call it Yahoo Yahoo or cyber fraud, stealing is stealing and must be condemned in all its entirety", he said.
